Roundworm
Toxocara larvae can also be passed out in the milk for up to
35 days after whelping.
Toxocara canis, A round worm that can grow to 7.5 to 15cm long. It has a point at each end.
The worm is frequently found in pregnant dogs and young puppies. Adult worms are
passed by puppies in the faeces often several at a time. The hormones triggered
during pregnancy activate the roundworm larvae which was laying dormant in the
tissue of the bitch. The puppy will receive more larvae via the mothers milk.
The toxocara larvae eggs can lie on plants, for several months until
ingested by another passing dog. A heavy worm burden in puppies will cause
breathing problems, coughing and can lead to pneumonia. It is very important
that puppies are wormed early (2-3 weeks old) and again at two week intervals
until 3 months old, then again at 6 and 12 months old. Discuss with your vet the
need for further dosing.
