Chocolate Poisoning
Like you I find chocolate delicious, and the most it might do is
increase the waste line, However to your Westie its lethal. Cocoa bean
from which chocolate is made contains a substance called theobromine. The
theobromine content makes this product very dangerous to dogs. If you give chocolate to your dog he will love it just like you or I
would, but this could lead to his death.
Quite a lot of people are
unaware of the problem. I have heard people say they're dog eat some chocolate
and it made him sick, that will teach him. This is not the correct attitude
to take, keep all chocolate out of reach at all
times. If your Westie has eaten enough theobromine he will be poisoned, the
dog will develop abdominal pain and vomiting which may contain blood.
As the process
progresses his breathing will increase to a much faster rate, His gums may turn
blue. If your dog has eaten any amount of chocolate take him to a vet immediate,
if its a large amount you do not have time to loose, be aware that
sometimes the symptoms can be delayed up to 15 hours after eating it.
Different types of chocolate have different amounts of theobromine, no
need to list the many types, just remember that all chocolate products
should be kept well away from your dog. Remember your Cocoa powder drink is also a lethal concoction.
Cocoa shell mulch that is used around the base of indoor potted
plants to provide nutrients and keep weeds at bay, is even more toxic
than chocolate so it should not be used in homes or gardens where dogs
could eat it.
Keep it out of reach NOW !
